Blair sighed, running her fingers through her hair, as she forced herself to look up at her best friend.

“I can’t…..I can’t have any children,”

Zoe froze, the shock of Blair’s words hitting her like a knife. She couldn’t have children? Pain for her friend rocked her, and she felt tears burning behind her eyes.

She reached over and pulled Blair to her chest, wishing she could stop her from crying.

“Oh, honey, I’m— I’m so sorry.” She wasn’t sure what to say. There was nothing she could say, really.

“What— how—” she stammered, looking for words. “What happened?”

“Well um, I….I slept with some guy, and he had chylmydia, I guess,” Blair sniffed back the tears, drying her eyes.

“And I didn’t really care enough to get myself checked out, I thought Chuck was never coming back to me. I didn’t care anymore. And then….then he did come back, and I had let it go so long it had progressed into my uterus, and we….we were going to the doctor one day and I just started to bleed….I don’t know exactly what happened, all I know is I woke up in the hospital and they had….ruined me,” She shuddered, thinking back to the awful day.

Zoe sighed, frowning into Blair’s hair. She had never really given much thought to having children, what with her and Edward always being chased down. It didn’t seem like the best environment to raise them in. But if she were to receive news that she couldn’t have children even if she wanted to… it would devastate her.

“Oh honey, that’s… that’s awful.” Her voice was a whisper. “But you’re not ruined. Just changed, that’s all. You’re still the amazing queen bee, Blair Waldorf.” She hugged Blair tighter, silently wishing this wouldn’t have happened to her best friend.

Blair smiled at he best friend; she always knew just what to say.

“T-Thanks, Zoe…” She smiled, taking her hand.

“And uh…..we have something in common,” she added, revealing her own diamond donning finger.

A tiny scream erupted from her throat and she clapped her hand over her mouth, her horror at Blair’s situation instantly forgotten.

“You’re—you’re engaged too?!” she asked, a little too loudly. A woman walking by them shot them an annoyed look.

She continued, more slowly. “But— when? How? Where have I been? I don’t even know this guy!”

Blair giggled, ignoring the obviously jealous woman.

“Well….I would think so, he’s Chuck Bass,” She smiled, silently giggling at the way that usually was Chuck’s catch phrase.

Blair let out a deep sigh; she knew Zoe wouldn’t let it go until she spilled it.

“Well…I….I slept around, and I….got into some things and…..it…..it made me ‘defective’,” She bit her lip to keep from crying, remembering that she’d never have a little girl to dress up or boy that would take over Chuck’s empire one day.

A horrible feeling clawed at her chest, restricting her air flow. She took a deep breath to clear it, reaching up and using a finger to turn Blair’s face toward her.

“Defective?” she asked gently, trying to hide the worry coloring her tone. “What do you mean ‘defective’?”

Blair sighed, running her fingers through her hair, as she forced herself to look up at her best friend.

“….Well, um…yeah,” Blair sighed; her turn to be dramatic.

“You know this summer when we met, I was….lost. I was looking for my….my Edward,” She shook her head, not knowing how else to describe how much Chuck meant to her. More than a boyfriend, it was like he completed her. She wasn’t Blair without her Chuck.

“Well….um, while I was doing that, I did some really stupid things, and….they had a bad result,” She wrung her hands in uneasiness.

“But, the good news is that Chuck finally returned to me, for good!” She chirped, trying to end positively.

Zoe frowned at Blair’s attempt to change the subject.

“Sorry hun, but you’re not getting off that easy. What do you mean ‘bad result’? What happened, B?”

Blair let out a deep sigh; she knew Zoe wouldn’t let it go until she spilled it.

Poor Zoe, she seemed scared out of her mind reliving the story; but it was all over now. She hoped; for Zoe’s sake.

“Yeah, I know what you mean….” She nodded, thinking about Chuck.

“Do you?” she asked, finally glancing over to meet Blair’s eyes. Something was troubling her.

“You have stories for me too, don’t you?”

She would forget herself for a few minutes. It would be nice to get out of her own little world and think about something else for once.

Blair’s eyes grew wider and wider with horror as Zoe’s story went on, and when she finally finished, it took everything for Blair not to drop her jaw to the floor.

“Ohmygod, Zoe! Why didn’t….why didn’t you call me? Is he okay? ARE YOU OKAY?” She placed a hand over hers, beginning to feel instant guilt for not checking up on her friend sooner.

“He’s fine,” she said dismissively, “I’m fine. It was just… well, it was traumatic. Apparently the hospital put him on some pill and Candy Man is gone… for now.”

She still wasn’t convinced Candy Man was completely gone… and she didn’t know how it would affect Edward.

“He’s home in bed right now. They finally released him a few days ago after they tested the heck out of him. I swear they took back all the blood they gave him in that dang transfusion.”

She sighed, shaking her head. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if I’d have lost him, Blair. I just— I can’t live without him.”

Poor Zoe, she seemed scared out of her mind reliving the story; but it was all over now. She hoped; for Zoe’s sake.

Hmm, groveling, kissing her hand….this was more like it.

“Mmmm….this is a much better technique, Chuck, I guess…..if you’re still asking….” She bit her lip with a smile.

“….Yes Chuck, I’ll marry you,”

“Good.” He added softly, pulling her closer as he pressed a kiss to her cheek. “How do you like the ring?”

Blair raised an eyebrow as if to say: Are you KIDDING me?

“…..It lives up to Chuck Bass standards,” She giggled, pulling him in for a kiss.

“……What happened, Zo?” She asked, afraid to hear the answer.

She took a deep breath, preparing to recount the story for the first time.

“Well, it was the morning after Edward proposed. We were talking and… he told me he wanted to get rid of Candy Man. That he wanted him gone for good. Candy Man didn’t like that… and he took over. He was acting strange— overly protective. Forceful. Vicious. I mean, he’s awful anyway, but for some reason he was being ridiculous. It made me angry, so I was doing my best to stay away from him.”

The memories were flooding back, the story pouring from her mouth almost automatically.

“He ended up hitting me… and I hit him back. It happens more often than you think.” Her eyes narrowed. “So I ran off into the other room and waited for him to come after me… but he didn’t. I thought it strange… he always comes after me. I ran back to the living room to see Edward curled on the floor, a letter opener lodged in his stomach.”

The memory almost made her sick, the thought making her light-headed. It had been such a gruesome sight— the blood, the pain, the confession that he’d done it to himself…

“Edward had made a last-ditch effort to get rid of Candy Man… by stabbing himself. I had him to the hospital in 20 minutes… any longer and he would have, well, you know…”

She trailed off, not meeting Blair’s eyes, and waited for her friend’s reaction.

Blair’s eyes grew wider and wider with horror as Zoe’s story went on, and when she finally finished, it took everything for Blair not to drop her jaw to the floor.
